Somatropin is recombinant human growth hormone: a 191-amino-acid protein identical to the hormone made by the pituitary. It arrives as a freeze-dried powder that is mixed with bacteriostatic water before use.

How it works

Growth hormone binds receptors in the liver and other tissues, raising IGF-1, which drives tissue growth, protein synthesis and the breakdown of fat for energy. It also reduces insulin sensitivity, so blood sugar can rise.

Clinical reference

For adult growth-hormone deficiency, Canadian monographs start at roughly 0.15 to 0.3 mg a day (about 0.45 to 0.9 IU) by subcutaneous injection, increased gradually by IGF-1 results. One milligram equals about three international units.

Combinations and interactions

  • Doctors titrate it against IGF-1 blood levels rather than a fixed dose.
  • Can raise blood sugar; insulin and diabetes medicines may need adjusting.
  • Glucocorticoids blunt its effect; thyroid hormone needs can change once GH treatment starts.

Risks and side effects

  • Fluid and joints. Swelling in hands and feet, joint stiffness and carpal tunnel symptoms.
  • Blood sugar. Insulin resistance and higher fasting glucose.
  • Tissue growth. Long-term excess can enlarge organs and bones.
  • Contamination risk. Mix with sterile technique; never use a cloudy or discoloured solution.

Do not use it if you have active cancer, diabetic eye disease, are critically ill, pregnant, or have closed growth plates with no medical indication.

Finding it. Anywhere on the belly at least 5 cm from the navel, away from scars and the waistband. Pinch a fold and inject into it.

Why it is used. The most fat, steady absorption and easy to see.

Watch for. Move each injection a few centimetres from the last to prevent lumps.

Why it is used. Easy to reach and a good rotation partner for the belly.
