The weeks after stopping anabolic steroids are when many people lose much of what they gained, and when some decide to start again because of how they feel. Some loss is unavoidable, but a lot of it is not. This guide covers what happens to your body after stopping and the habits that hold on to the most muscle.
- Some weight lost after stopping is water and glycogen, not muscle.
- Muscle is most at risk while natural testosterone is still suppressed.
- Keep training heavy, keep protein high and eat at or slightly above maintenance.
- Protect sleep and avoid an aggressive diet until hormones have recovered.
What happens after stopping
When outside androgens clear, there is a gap before natural testosterone returns. During that gap, the hormonal signal for muscle growth is lower than it was before you started. Water and glycogen retention linked to some compounds also disappears, so the scale drops quickly in the first weeks. That early drop is not all muscle, which is worth knowing to avoid panic.
Training
Keep lifting heavy. Muscle is maintained by the signal that it is needed, and heavy compound lifts send that signal most strongly. Volume can be reduced a little if recovery suffers, but intensity should stay. Research shows muscle can be maintained with surprisingly little training volume as long as the loads stay challenging.
Protein and calories
Aim for around 1.6 to 2.2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight a day, spread across meals. Eat at maintenance or slightly above. A calorie deficit straight after stopping combines two muscle-losing signals at once: low hormones and low energy. If fat loss is a goal, it is usually wiser to wait until testosterone has recovered.
Sleep and stress
Natural testosterone production depends heavily on sleep. Seven to nine hours, a regular schedule and a dark, cool room support recovery. High stress and alcohol work against it. See sleep and recovery.
Managing mood and motivation
Low energy, flat mood and low libido are common in the weeks after stopping. Knowing that in advance makes them easier to ride out. Training, sunlight, social contact and routine help. If low mood is severe or lasts, see a doctor; in a crisis, call or text 988. Our guide to mood and mental health covers the warning signs.
Track recovery with bloodwork
Testing testosterone, LH and FSH once outside hormones have cleared, then a few months later, shows whether recovery is on track. See testosterone suppression.
Body weight will drop as water leaves. Strength on main lifts, waist measurement and photos show what muscle you are really keeping.
Realistic expectations
Most people keep a meaningful part of the muscle they built, particularly if they trained well before and during use. Gains made quickly with large amounts or water-heavy compounds tend to shrink more. Over the following months, consistent training and good nutrition can rebuild and hold a natural level that many people find satisfying.
Supplements that help
Creatine monohydrate supports strength and lean mass and is worth continuing. Protein powder is a convenient way to hit protein targets. Products marketed as testosterone boosters rarely have meaningful evidence.
A simple plan for the first eight weeks
| Area | What to do |
|---|---|
| Training | Keep main lifts heavy; trim volume slightly if needed |
| Calories | Maintenance or a small surplus |
| Protein | 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg per day |
| Sleep | Seven to nine hours, regular schedule |
| Bloodwork | Once compounds clear, then again later |
| Mood | Check in weekly; ask for help if it drops |

Frequently asked questions
How much muscle will I lose after stopping?
Some, especially water and glycogen early on. Training and nutrition decide how much real muscle stays.
Should I cut right after stopping?
It is usually better to wait until hormones recover, because a deficit adds to muscle loss.
Why do I feel so tired after stopping?
Natural testosterone is often still low. It usually improves as production restarts.
