NPP vs Deca: Two Nandrolone Esters Compared

NPP and Deca are the same hormone, nandrolone, on different esters. How release speed, injection frequency, side effects and clearance time compare.

NPP and Deca are often discussed as if they were two different steroids. They are not. Both are nandrolone; only the ester attached to it differs. That one change decides how fast it acts, how often it is injected and how long it stays in the body, which is what this comparison is about.

Key points

  • NPP is nandrolone phenylpropionate; Deca is nandrolone decanoate. The hormone released is identical.
  • NPP’s half-life is around two to three days; Deca’s is roughly six to twelve days.
  • Short ester means quicker onset and quicker clearance; long ester means fewer injections and a longer tail.
  • Side effects are the same nandrolone side effects; the ester changes how long they last.

The ester is the whole difference

Esters are fatty-acid chains bolted onto a steroid so it dissolves in oil and leaves the injection site slowly. Phenylpropionate is a shorter chain with a ring in it; decanoate is a long, ten-carbon chain. Once either reaches the bloodstream, enzymes remove the ester and the body sees plain nandrolone. Nothing about the ester makes the hormone stronger, cleaner or harsher in itself.

Side by side

NPP Deca
Ester Phenylpropionate Decanoate
Approximate half-life 2 to 3 days 6 to 12 days
Typical concentration 100 mg/ml 200 to 300 mg/ml
Injection frequency in practice Every 2 to 3 days Once or twice a week
Time to steady levels About 1 to 2 weeks Several weeks
Clearance after the last injection Roughly 2 weeks Several weeks, metabolites much longer
Nandrolone per 100 mg About 67 mg About 64 mg

Why some prefer NPP

The main argument for NPP is control. Nandrolone has a set of side effects that some people tolerate poorly: low libido, raised prolactin, water retention and mood changes. With a short ester, stopping means those effects fade within days to a couple of weeks. With Deca, they can persist for a month or more after the last injection. NPP also reaches steady levels sooner, so whatever is going to happen happens earlier.

Why some prefer Deca

Fewer injections. Every injection carries a small risk of infection and some discomfort, and NPP is known for post-injection soreness. Deca’s slow release also gives a flatter blood-level curve, which some people find easier to live with.

Side effects do not depend on the ester

  • Suppression: nandrolone strongly suppresses natural testosterone and sperm production.
  • Libido and erections: commonly affected, especially without testosterone alongside.
  • Prolactin: nandrolone’s progestogenic activity can raise it; only bloodwork shows this.
  • Cardiovascular markers: HDL tends to fall, blood pressure can rise, and the heart’s walls can thicken with long use.
  • Red blood cells: nandrolone raises hematocrit, which was why it was once used for anemia.
Detection windows differ hugely.

Nandrolone metabolites can stay detectable in urine for many months after Deca. Anyone tested for sport should not assume a short ester clears quickly enough either.

Timing bloodwork on each ester

Because NPP rises and falls within days, a blood test reflects mainly the last injection or two. With Deca the picture is smoother but shifts slowly over weeks, so a single result early on can understate where levels will settle. Either way, write down injection dates and share them with whoever reads your results. Prolactin, estradiol, hematocrit, a lipid panel and liver and kidney markers are the core set; blood pressure is best tracked at home every week.

After the last injection

Recovery of natural testosterone cannot start until the outside hormone has mostly cleared. With NPP that is roughly two weeks; with Deca it can be a month or more, and some people find their libido and mood take longer still to come back. A recovery blood test a few weeks after levels should have normalised shows whether the body’s own production has restarted or whether a doctor needs to look further.

Which is “better”?

Neither builds more muscle per milligram of nandrolone. The question is how much control you want over how quickly things start and stop, versus how many injections you are willing to do. Everything else, including the bloodwork to watch, is the same. Our full Deca-Durabolin guide covers the hormone itself in depth.

Frequently asked questions

Is NPP harsher than Deca?

No. The hormone is the same; NPP simply gets into and out of the system faster, so its effects appear and fade sooner.

Why does NPP hurt more to inject?

The phenylpropionate ester and the solvents used can irritate muscle more than decanoate. Pain that grows after a day or two, with heat or fever, needs a doctor.

Can I switch from one to the other?

Because the hormone is identical, the body does not care which ester delivered it. The difference is only in timing.
